Crandallite ps. Wavellite
Crandallite ps. Wavellite
A striking example of this unique find at Mauldin Mountain in Montgomery Co., Arkansas - two large wavellite spheres formed one atop the other and have completely altered to crandallite. This find is reported to be 10 or 20 years old but there is little information available to be certain. Crandallite pseudomorphs of wavellite have been found in the past, but they are typically flat assemblages on matrix, whereas this find produced full floaters, some even exhibiting twinning. This specimen has the largest spheres I have seen, the largest reaching over 1 in (or 2.5cm) across. Most of the piece is grey color but the backside does show some green, indicating that a minute amount of wavellite is still present. Some bits of massive, grey to white quartz have intergrown near the bottom and on the backside, giving the specimen even more aesthetic appeal. It is in great condition, with no significant damage to report. Custom mounting is available at checkout.
